Some last details and Finish Results!!

Thursday 7/29

swim 1100

500: 9.09
200: back
200: breast
200: free

tested out my new two-piece today, that I was thinking using for the tri, and man am I glad I did...just as I should have guessed the bottoms were like a sail...thus the snail pace 500. And lack of overall workout. Guess I'll be wearing the same suit I did it the last tri and just sweating buckets as I bike and run in a one piece, at least the tri will be over before noon.

Friday 7/30

swim 1400

500: 7.35
100: breast
100: back
100: free 1.30
300: 4, 75s...no flip turns.
300: 4.48

Oh yeah!! Woo, what a fast 500! Was kinda gambling with my health by trying for a fast time 2 days before the tri...but super happy I did, because it gave me a HUGE boost to my self-esteem.

Race Results:

http://www.tuxbro.com/TriIndyS.html

I felt pretty darn good today. I was happy with my average speed on the bike...4 mph faster than i'd ever gotten on past rides, ah, the joys of competition.

Swim felt pretty good...coulda done without the dead bird that was floating in the water as I was walking to the start line. But the canal wasn't near as gross as i'd feared. And the two 90 degree turns weren't that bad. My goggles fogged up like nothing other near the end, so I ended up taking them off and putting them on my head at the end, looks like some fog-stopper stuff is in my future.

Run, not as bad as it coulda been. I wasn't miserable, but was definitely thinking the entire time I was running, that I would much rather not be running. I DID sprint at the finish, which was perfect proof that I had plenty of power left that I could have used in the run.

So happy I did the triathlon. It was awesome having Mom and Jim there to cheer me on and take some pics to document the occasion. As I came across the finish line, the announcer said my name and that I was from Indianapolis, IN! we'll have to see if they took some good pics.

Today: I did a Triathlon...sort of.

Swim
1650m

550: 8.48
550: 9.06
550: 9.11

Swam a mile at lunch today. The key to swimming all 550s? No rest inbetween. Good fast day, and I didn't even have to have an asian guy to race!

Bike
10miles
after work

14.64 avg mph
41.32 minutes

In order to be able to bike continuously at speed I rode a 2.3 mile loop 5 times.

Right after getting back from the bike I:

Run
2.3 miles
23.08min

pretty much felt like I was going to die the whole time, but found my second wind around mile 2.

New Strategy: just kick ass in the swim.

weekend:

Saturday 7/24

After paddling the Loop at the Lower Yough I ran back to car so we could get the boats on the car.

Then, Derick, Rob, Xavier, Dave and I paddled the Upper Yough. We had hopes to do two runs, but the Race was that day, so the river was pretty packed and we didn't have too much speed, so we opted to chill at National Falls and watch the racers come through. I decided I would dive into the hole at the falls. I of course still had my helmet and pfd on. I swam it 3 times and it was tiring and a blast, I had the crowd that was gathered quite entertained. I was paddling in my new Solo this weekend and got a lot of compliments on the boat. I was very happy with how it handled.

Sunday 7/25

I got up at 7am and ran for about 18 minutes. It was rocky, buggy, uphill, and I was super dehydrated, oh and it was hot. After I was done, I took a dip in the river to cool off (all of this was while everyone was still asleep, gotta love feeling accomplished first thing in the morning.)

I swam a little at the putin for the lower yough. And later at swimmers I dove in and tried to body surf...a few times. I got really good at surfing my Solo, and I surfed a bunch. I can definitely feel the effects from all of the paddling; my back is killing me from all of the flat water paddling.

Monday 7/26

swim 1500

550: 9.l2
550: 10.12
300: 5 min, 4--75s 10 sec rest
100: 1.35

Good day. Felt really solid. That first 550 was the fastest I've ever swam a 550, I really would have liked to swim farther, but as usual...time to go back to the office.

Tuesday 7/27

swim 1400m

550: 9.07
550: 8.19
300: 5 min

I am STILL blown away by the 2nd 550. I was playing chase with this asian guy that always swims at the same time as me. We were sharing a lane and a couple times I got really close to passing him. For about 50m I was catching up and nearly passing him. Then I did pass him around lap 12. For the last 250m i was just keeping him behind me. Stupendously awesome day. Words cant even describe how happy I was/am.

Good (workout) Friday

Friday 7/23

morning run

2.4 miles
19.50

Sweaty but productive run felt pretty accomplished and tried out a new route.

Lunch

swim 1400

550: 9.21
550: 9.30
300: 5.00

Scatter brained once again. Lost my lap count on my first set, but looking at the time it had to have been a 550. 2nd set same deal, lost it again, this one though really felt like I swam 2 more laps than 22. but seeing the time, i decided to err on the side of saying I did fewer laps rather than too many, makin myself look awesome.

Going to Pennsylvania to paddle this weekend. Swimsuit and running shoes are packing. Hopefully I get some training in.

Some miles mean more than others...

Wednesday 7/21

Run
2 miles: 18.38
Pretty uneventful run, once again waaaay humid and was all too happy to take a shower when I got back.

I swam 1650 Meters!!!
(at lunch!)

550: 9.27
550: 9.30
300: 4, 75s resting for 10 sec
250: 4.30

30 sec break between 550 and 550
no break between 550 and 300.
no break between 300 and 250.

Definitely one of those days where I really wished I didn't have to leave to go back to work. I felt like a million bucks today. no problems breathing and definitely kept my pace up. Afterall my two 550s were nearly identical. The epiphany today? I realized that I could swim this far everyday if I wanted to. All I have to do is swim mostly long distance instead of doing sprints and I can't rest between any of the sets. That's not too difficult right?

550=22 laps
550=22
300=12
250=10
_____
66 laps
1650 meters = 1.02526247 miles

Thursday 7/22

Swim 1300

500M: 8.29
100--back
100--breast
100--free
300--4, 75s
200M--3.20ish

I contemplated doing an IM while I swam my 200, but by the time I was done, lunch sounded like a better idea.

I had plans to run every night this week...life just keeps getting in the way. Also had plans to get up and run every morning this week...sleep keeps getting in the way of that.

hmmm maybe i'll go run now. This whole, power company disconnecting our electric because my Aunt Sylvia didn't pay the bill (or it got lost in the mail.), has got me pretty wound up.

Guess it's time to head home to a hot, dark house, where I can't open the fridge because the only thing keeping it cool is that I haven't opened it yet....ugh life, so overrated. Id rather just swim all day. screw going home or going to work, that's what i'll do, swim 24 hrs a day. stopping only to eat CAKE!! (I've been craving it all week.)

Gas leaks, humidity, and chlorine

I had a very crazy trip with mom to Davidson, NC to go get my baby Biscuit. Around Austin on the drive to Louisville I noticed that my gas tank wasn't holding onto my gas very well. Made it the 29miles to Greentree toyota without blowing up into a flaming ball of fire, but though I filled up 29 miles before, I now had a half a tank of gas, my car smelled like gas, and a had a sizable puddle and trail of gas under my car.

We rented a car to get to Davidson...once we got outta town the trip was pretty uneventful.

Still waiting to get my Rav back.

Sunday 7/18

Ran ~3 miles

On Sunday morning I ran about about 3 miles, 23 minutes. I left right at 7am, it was so ungodly humid. By the time I got back I was dripping with sweat.

Monday 7/19

No run today, I was a bum.

And didn't swim either, I had to be back too early for work stuff.

Tuesday 7/20

At lunch I swam 1550

I was a space case today, kept getting my lap count messed up. but felt well enough to continuously swim today...only about 10 sec between each set.

550M--9.27
500M--8.55
300M--4, 75s
200M--3.40

Getting up early in the morning to run, probably will swim at lunch, and will hopefully bike and run after work.

Friday, July 16, 2010

My other car is a BICYCLE!!

Eventful walk with zoey this morning.

She's pulling as usual, after some luscious distant scent. I'm busy reeling her in and as I'm doing so, this animal appears out of nowhere. Zoey is probably about 4 feet from it at this point. Zoey's standing stock still staring it down, and it's staring back at her. At this point, I'm thinking that it's a cat, then my eyes adjust or it gets a little lighter....and NO, this is not a cat is a friggin' raccoon!! About this time Zoey realizes it too, she's going nuts pulling, growling, panting, hacking. I manage to get away with out any great throw down battle occurring.

Zoey's reward came when we got further down in our morning travel and there was a bunny. At this point it was almost 5am, no one's around, so I decided to make her morning. Zoey was primed and ready for a chase. I unlatched her leash, and she was off! zooming across the peoples yard, to no avail of course, but she was having a blast.

When we came walking back for our loop, I opted to walk on the road, to give Rocky a wide berth in case he was still there, and sho-nuff there he was, frozen in the light of my flashlight, we snuck by with more: pulling, growling, panting, and hacking.

This is not the first time that i've seen this raccoon, so I shouldn't have been that shocked, but this is definitely the closest Zoey or I have ever been to one. The first time I saw him he was lying underneath someones gate into their driveway--dead center just lying there. Zoey freaking out then too, but it was quite far away (the other side of the road) That time I stood there shocked. I'm in the city!! and there is a raccoon lying in someone's driveway!!

Road into work today.

9.25 there
9.25 home

Pretty uneventful ride to work and home.

I felt like I was moving at a pretty good clip on the way home. I hit 21.5 and 18 mph for awhile. The only thing that's a real bummer on the monon is that there are so many cross streets that it's really difficult to stay in a good rhythm for very long.

Bike and run in the morning and then road trip with mom to go get my Biscuit!!

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Run and swim!!

Thursday 7/15

I ran 1.6 miles this morning: 15.36min

It was 77 degrees at 6am.
I was completely drenched and dripping with sweat when I got back. It was sooo humid.
I sprayed on bug spray before leaving, it's sweat resistant so I had droplets beaded up all over my arms and legs.

I felt good for not running in so long. I felt like I was going faster than I usually do, which judging from the fact that I only had a 1/2 mile left, that may or may not be true.

Swim
1350M

500M free 8.35
100M back
100M breast
100M free
300M--4--75s
200M free 3.20
50M breast

On the last fifty I was planning to do two 25 underwaters, but it's apparently been too long, since I could only make it halfway before needing to come up for air.

The plan is to bike-in to work tomorrow, hopefully it'll pan out after a weather check.

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Swimming...swimming...hmm i should probably run and bike too!

Tuesday 7/13

Today I swam a 1300

It consisted of:
500M in 8.33
300--12 25s alternating between free and back
300--4 75s all free (resting 10 sec between)
200 free just over 3 min

Felt pretty solid today, definitely wished I didn't have to stop swimming and head back to work.

Wednesday 7/14

Swam a 1500 today!!

warmup: 500M 8.12
200m 3.20
300m 4--75s of free
warmdown: 500M 8.30

I felt stupendous today. For my first 500, I swam next to this guy and we were perfectly paced, I was baffled and amazed by it the whole time, but it was awesome because it helped to keep me paced and I had that extra encouragement to continue to keep up my speed. I would say this definitely contributed to my time 15sec faster. We shared the lane up until part of the way through my last 500...which if monday i felt like i couldn't breathe, I felt like I didn't need to today! That last 500 was still pretty darn quick.

I was going to ride into work tomorrow, but they're calling for afternoon storms. I really don't wanna get soaked, plus it's supposed to be close to 100 degrees. So I'm saying it here, so I will do it. I am running in the morning. It's been waaaay too long.

Swimming and Paddling

Thursday 7/8

500 warm up at 8.30
200 random strokes
200 pull free
100 pull back
50 free

During warm-up felt a twinge in my left ankle. something similar to a needle sticking out of it. tested it out for 200 just to be sure. Then did pulls since I couldn't kick.

Still feeling it at my desk, guess i gotta take it easy for a little while.

Friday 7/9

Took the day off from working out to eat at Chick-Fil-A

Worked from 6 to 3 today so I could start heading south to drive with Zoey to the river so I could demo boats.

Saturday 7/10

I did 12 runs of the falls. I Demoed 4 different boats: LL Jefe, LL Remix, Dagger Mamba, and a Small Fluid Solo. I like both the Mamba and the Solo (but this may be partially due to the fact that they both got me into Micro [a small eddy that you catch in the middle of the rapid on river left])

I went back to the garage at Brian Aubin's place and picked Zoey up. Then we drove to the lake where I swam across the lake, then to one end and back again. I did this twice, which worked out to about forty minutes of swimming.

Sunday 7/11

Got up early today thanks to Zoey standing next to the door of the tent and scratching at the door. I didn't want her to tear up the tent so I decided to get up. (an hour earlier than I had my alarm set for, but I guess I better get used to that if I ever want to have kids one day.)

I then drove to the lake and did the same thing I had before. We had the place to ourselves and Zoey was attached to a tree by the side of the lake: a 15ft cam strap attached to her leash.

The water was soooo warm, the same temp at 7:50 in the morning as it had been at 4:00pm the previous day. There was a sort of mist/fog hanging over the water, due I guess to the difference in air and water temp.

I swam for about 30min this morning. I would have swam longer, but as I was swimming from one end of the lake to the other I could hear Zoey whining, which just broke my heart. On my second lap when I was clear across the lake I could hear Zoey barking, so I stopped treading water and booked it back to her in case something was wrong, but it turned out she was hung up around a tree.

My confession about lakes: they scare the bajesus outta me. It totally just creeps me out how I have no idea how deep the water is. As I'm swimming and can't see anything though I have on goggles. It probably goes back to my hometown Elizabeth, IN where someone told me once that in this old abandoned quarry that everyone used to swim in, there was a crane at the bottom. And ever since that now all I can think about as I'm swimming across and doing laps is that I have no idea what's lurking below the surface.

I then went and signed up at Endless River Adventures to demo boats. Boats on tab for today: Medium Fluid Solo and the Wavesport Habitat 74. They said to come back around 11:30 to demo the boat...it is a 2hr demo free of charge.

They had a Small size Fluid Solo for 699 with a warranty on the porch...I really wanted to buy it, but the Medium is closer in volume and length to the Hero that I've paddled a few times.

I took the Solo down the falls six times today. I ran into a guy after my sixth run and got to talking to him about the boat...after the conversation I had basically talked myself into buying the boat.

I ended up telling the owner of the store that I loved the boat and he told me that maybe we could strike up a deal. He sold me a brand new Medium Fluid Solo for 825.00. It comes with a 3 year warranty and for a creek boat, I felt like the 200 dollars over my price range was worth the security of having a warranty to fall back on.

Monday 7/12

Swam at lunch today. 1300M

500M 8.40
100M free, 100M back, 100M breast
4 75M sprints with a 10sec rest in between
200M cooldown 3.20

ankle felt fine today and this weekend too. It was soo weird today though, I just felt like I couldn't get enough air.

Probably will swim tomorrow too...I know I'm training for a triathlon, but I just love swimming too much to have to give it up to do the one thing I hate more than anything...running.

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

A delayed but wordy update.

Friday 7/2

Today was my rest day, but I swam at lunch. Todays workout:

700M in 11.42
4 100s: breast, free, back, free
4 75 sprints of free
100 IM

As I was swimming my last 75M sprint I looked and saw a guy swimming the butterfly. I was inspired by the guy and decided to finish off with an IM. It is in these moments when your body is screaming for you to stop, even the clock is suggesting it's time to go back to work but all your mind wants to do is swim. So, though I was on the brink of exhaustion, I kept swimming and finished off with an IM.

Total for the day: 1500M

**note that these swims are within a tight time table--give or take exactly 30 min to swim as much as i can muster.

I've discovered a very subtle balance between how much to eat before swimming. If I'm starving then I'll stop early and be distracted the whole time I'm swimming. If I eat too close to swimming, then I can feel it the whole time I'm trying to swim. But if I eat a teensy bit, then I'm not hungry and not feeling like spewing.

I love it when I am in the middle of swimming a set and I suddenly don't feel like I'm trying all that hard. Though I know I'm truckin' along, it's as though I'm not even swimming my body is just gliding through that water full speed ahead.

awesome day.

Sat, Sun, Monday

Then there was the weekend. Rob and I drove to Pennsylvannia to paddle the Upper Yough and the Savage River. We paddled the Upper on Saturday and monday. Both runs went really well for me. Saturday we met up with a club called the Keel Haulers (a canoe club based out of Cleveland.) The guys we ran it with had been paddling for a range of 5 to 40 years. They gave us awesome lines and helped a lot with describing the rapids to me.

Rob had a scary pin on fuck-up falls (one of the last major rapids.) His boat
was broached between two rocks right at the entrance to the meat of the rapid.
Luckily it was the safest possible way it could have gone down. He was sitting
completely upright, so he could breathe fine, there were rocks that the people
that helped to rescue him could walk along. They ended up using a throw up and
having him pop his skirt and then walk out of his boat, while holding onto the
rope the guys were holding. Once he was out it was a HUGE task to get his boat
out of the rocks. As soon as he popped his skirt the boat was completely filled
with water making the boat impossible to maneuver, flip, plus it was very well
wedged between the rocks. finally after some heave hoing and careful angling and
pulling the boat was freed and then we were able to continue on.

Sunday we paddled the Savage, which was barrels of fun. 5 miles of continuous
3/4. There are only a couple majorish rapids, one such one is Triple Drop, but
you just have to go just to the left of the main hole and punch through the edge
of the wave at the bottom. Basically this river was soooo much fun. They had a
free shuttle van that would take you and your boat back to the top. Rob and I
did 4 runs, averaging 38 minutes apiece...needless to say that though we were
off the river by 2:30pm, we were both beat. Oh and there is also a boof that you
do off of a dam, so that was pretty fun.

Monday we went to the loop at the Lower Yough to waste some time before we could put on the Upper...stupid 1pm release...I demoed the biscuit, and have now found my one
true-love so I'm in the process of hunting one out on boatertalk or craigslist.
it's the LL biscuit 55 if anyone out there knows someone that would like to sell me one.

Then after having to part ways with my beloved future playboat, we drove to the
upper put-in. Got there around 12:15 and the second group of Keel Haulers was
actually "expecting" us...I felt so special. Put on the river and had a solid
run. I actually didn't flip once today!!! My favorite rapids thus
far...Hellzinger, Shotgun, Bastard boof...among many others, but those are the
ones that stick out. Rob didn't pin today, though as I threaded the needle it
was kind of eerie to be sneaking through where he had been stuck two days previous.

Overall, super stellar weekend. I'm kind of loving the upper right now, but I
could do without the massive crowds, but hopefully as I get used to the lines
and the river, this won't bug me quite as much. After all of this paddling Rob
and I managed to put in 41 miles, so yeah, my shoulders are sore today.

Saturday
Ran 2 miles
Upper Yough: 9.5 miles

Sunday
Savage River: 20 miles

Monday
Loop: 2 miles
Upper: 9.5 miles

Tuesday
1300M swim

8.25 500M free
12 25s--6 back, 6 free no break
4 75M free sprints
200M free cool down

As I mentioned in the above paragraphs, I paddled 41 miles the weekend prior to this workout. My shoulders were soooo sore the whole time swimming my 500M warm-up but awesomely by the time I was done swimming I had actually been loosened up.

Wednesday

9.5 bike to work
~3 mile run at lunch
9.5 bike home
(no run once I got home, too freaking hot)

The bike in was good today. It worked out quite conveniently because they are re-paving the parking lot, so to avoid having to park forever away from the entrance I decided to avoid driving completely and get a work-out in the process.

The run at lunch was murder, it was around 93 degrees around noon when I was running. I wasn't even that physically tired, but more so of the heat. I stopped a few times, not out of a need to rest tired muscles, but because there was a tree to stand under and the shade was a welcome retreat. my time was just under 30 minutes today.

Now that the heat of the summer has finally kicked up, I'm thinking of altering my schedule. I may just lengthen my morning run and forget about the evening run to avoid the heat.

Okay I think that's it.

Birds chirping and dogs barking

Got up at 4:30 this morning and after taking zoey for a nice long walk (in great contrast to our nightly walks, which have been getting shorter and shorter as the 4th approaches...zoey reacts to the constant fireworks as if we're in the middle of a war and she just wants to be safe in the house.)

Todays Summary:
2 M am run
1300 Meter swim at lunch
2 M evening run

The run this morning was wonderful. I used my bike taillight, which came with an elastic arm band, so I could be visible, as well as my headlamp...running at 5 am there isn't too much light just yet.
No need for music this morning! I had a symphony of birds to keep my ears entertained. Between the cold temps, the almost non existent traffic, and the lack of having done any other sports to wear my muscles out first, I ran about 20 seconds faster...small steps.

Swim went well at lunch, was a bit stressed before lunch so I had extra encouragement to get to the pool. As soon I hit the water there was no longer anything to think about but breathing and swimming. I ended up swimming a 12 minute 700, which I would say is a pretty average speed for me. I also swam a 300, consisting of twelve 25M sprints, alternating back and free. The finale was another 300 of four 75M sprints of free.

The run this evening was so so. I decided to mix things up and run backwards. Well, I ran the route by starting where I usually finish and finishing where I usually start. This was nice for a change of scenery...the other side of the road. The only downside was that I'm not used to the roads I have to turn onto when coming from the other direction, so I accidentally cut my ride a tad short by turning one road too soon. So my impressive time today? 16.30...but that's without about 2 tenths of a mile.

5 weeks of Torture...the adventure begins

Started my training routine for the Triathlon yesterday.

The plan is to wake up at 4:30 each morning. I'll take Zoey for her customary walk and then weather permitting
EITHER
Bike to work, run at least 3 miles at lunch, bike home, then run 2 miles.
OR
Run before work, swim at lunch, and run 2 miles after work

So summary for DAY 1??
9 M bike ride to work
3.2 M run at lunch
9 M bike ride home
2 M run

Not bad for the first day! The weather was amazing today, run at lunch was a bit toasty, but with zero humidity anything would feel good. I'd say it was a successful day overall.

Only low points of today? I hit a HUGE pothole on Kessler on the way home. A hit that was felt by not only my bike, but also my body. Decision made: the road isn't any smoother than the constant up and down of the crack riden, uneven sidewalk.

Summary DAY 2
9 M bike ride to work
no run at lunch :( ...work got in the way
9 M bike ride home
2 M run to the bank and back

The weather was AMAZING today!! Got up a bit late but still was able to get rolling in time, but boy was it cold. Say what??? Yeah the temperature this morning was 65 degrees. But man was it lovely.

Until...I got about 2 miles from home and realized my back tire was waaaay low. I panicked about it the whole ride to work, plummeting my average speed and upping my ride time by about 25 minutes. Luckily there was a morning ride for the employees this morning so the bike rack was fully stocked and lots of folks had bike pumps on hand, so I got 'er aired up and the ride home was muuuch faster. Thanks Steve for the air!

As far as times go...Looks like my 2 mile run is holding at about 19minutes....but at least i'm not dropping dead right? Well Google maps estimates 38 minutes to walk that far, so I'm at least going twice as fast as walking! woo hoo
